Three years after the Commonwealth Games (CWG) led to one of India’s biggest corruption scandals of recent times, the investigation into the alleged irregularities committed is stumbling with the CBI having closed its FIR related to grant of two contracts to a Swiss firm for lack of evidence.

The agency has so far closed 10 out of the 19 FIRs it had registered for lack of evidence.

The agency had examined allegations that the two multi-crore contracts were given to the Swiss firms without taking approval of the Group of Ministers (GoM) over the issue, said a source.

The CBI had examined the role of CWG Organising Committee (OC)’s former chairman Suresh Kalmadi and a senior IAS official of Maharashtra cadre in its probe into alleged irregularities related to the award of two contracts — Games Workforce Service and Games, Planning, Project and Risk Management — to the Swiss firm, according to an agency source.

“We had examined Kalmadi and the senior bureaucrat but could not find any thing substantial against them and so have filed a closure report in a Delhi court,” said the source.

“The probe concluded that the allegations against the OC members could not be established,” the source added.
