Debris stall work on Rohtang tunnel work for few hours

Work on strategic Rohtang tunnel came to a standstill for few hours on Thursday, when some part of tunnel from north portal side collapsed.


According to Border Roads Organisation officials, the work has resumed.

Dedicating team of workers is braving inhospitable weather and bone-chilling cold to construct 8.8-km-long tunnel one of the most ambitious road projects undertaken in Himachal Pradesh.

An official said, excavation work was going on in full swing from both side and 4km stretch has been.

North portal side of Rohtang pass remains under snow cover for almost six months in a year, which hampers the work of tunnel excavation.

The [roject is scheduled to be complete by 2015.

The tunnel would be a boon for the people of tribal Lahaul-Spiti district as it would boost the tourism in this snowbound area.

The horseshoe shaped tunnel would ensure all-weather connectivity to Lahaul-Spiti from Manali. The tunnel would reduce the distance between Manali and Keylong by around 60km.
