The Uttarakhand chief minister was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) around 7.30 pm on Friday and was being kept under observation.

“He is stable and will be under observation for the next two days. There is a fracture in the C1 and C2 vertebrae. There is no need for a surgery, but a cervical collar has to be applied to stabilize the injury,” said AIIMS spokesperson Amit Gupta.

Union health minister Harsh Vardhan paid Rawat a visit on Friday night and inquired about his condition.

“I was told that his head hit the roof of the chopper four times causing the neck injury. I spoke to the doctors at the hospital and they informed me there were no head injuries,” Vardhan said.

The health minister again voiced his concerns about the need to wear seat belts and said this incident and that of Gopinath Munde’s death could have been avoided had both the leaders been wearing seat belt.
