A man was arrested here on Sunday night for allegedly raping a minor girl in captivity for four days at several places in Haridwar.
The police said the accused, Ishtekar Abbas, and the girl knew each other, and by promising to marry her, he took her to his friend’s house in Haridwar on Thursday. There, he raped her once and a couple of more times at several other places for the next three days. On the fourth day, he took her to the Jatwara bridge over the Ganga canal, pushed her into it and walked away, the police said.
The drowning girl was rescued by a group of boys, who were playing in a nearby field, the police said. They took her to the police station, where it was found that she was reported missing by her father three days ago. Police said it was also possible that she jumped into the canal herself following her alleged ordeal.
After registering an FIR, the police arrested Ishtekar from Aikkad village on Sunday night. Police said he was engaged as a tractor driver in Gaddowali village and is a Class 8 dropout.
Meanwhile, the police have come under flak for what critics called its lackadaisical approach to the missing complaint on the girl. There is allegation that the police dilly-dallied with the search operation, while she was being raped in the same locality.
They (the police) also delayed in taking the victim to a hospital for medical examination, the public alleged. Mohammad Indrish, gram pradhan of Pathri, said,“We had informed the police station in-charge of Aikkad four days ago that the girl was missing, but no action was taken to trace her till she was found.”
