Putting an end to speculation about his candidature as an independent from Nainital parliamentary seat, veteran Congress leader Narayan Dutta Tiwari has decided not to contest election owing to health reasons. The veteran leader also trained gun on his own party and asked his supporters to vote for the ‘right candidate’.

Tiwari with his biological son Rohit recently toured Nainital parliamentary constituency and met supporters. He gauged the public mood and asked supporters whether he should contest polls. The buzz was that ND could contest as an independent with outside support of Samajwadi Party (SP). However, the SP flip-flopped over support to Tiwari.

It was SP Uttarakhand unit which said first that it was reluctant to withdraw its candidate in support of ‘any’ candidate. However SP chief Mulayam Singh on Monday said Tiwari was above party politics and SP has no hesitation on supporting him.

Meanwhile, Tiwari on Tuesday took a U-turn and said even if he is elected, he will not be in position to give time to the public due to his falling health.

“I have served Congress for more than 6 decades. Now some people in the party accuse me of cosying up to Samajwadis. I want to tell them that Congress has itself backed theory of democratic socialism (Samajwad),”said Bhawani Bhatt, officer on special duty to Tiwari quoting the veteran leader. Tiwari was referring to SP chief Mulayam Singh. The former has been staying in UP capital Lucknow for the last couple of months on the invitation of SP.

Interestingly sources said that Tiwari was desperate to contest on Congress ticket. He even tried to meet party chief Sonia Gandhi last month in New Delhi but she did not meet him. Tiwari mulled the option to contest as an independent but the support he was expecting from voters to win the seat was not witnessed.

KC Singh 'Baba' files nomination papers

Congress candidate from Nainital parliamentary seat KC Singh ‘Baba’ filed his nomination papers in Rudrapur on Tuesday.

A large number of party workers and chief minister Harish Rawat accompanied Baba. Apart from Baba, Samajwadi Party candidate Avtar Singh and Kailash Pande of CPI (ML) also filed nominations from Nainital seat.
