He was the only Delhi Police officer who was sitting along with chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on the dharna against the Union government. The rest of his colleagues were busy securing the protest site while some others were busy cordoning off the area.

He is not a protestor but sub-inspector Dinesh Kumar, the personal security officer of the Delhi chief minister, who has kept Kejriwal company ever since he took oath at Ramlila Maidan.

Posted with the security unit of Delhi Police, Kumar remains by the CM’s side even when he is on the Secretariat campus. Since Kejriwal has not accepted any other official security cover, Kumar has a tough job at his hand. His job got tougher during the protest near Rail Bhawan.

Kumar, who has provided security to over 40 VIPs so far, said Kejriwal is the toughest of them all. “I am here to control the crowd. I have to make sure nobody gets close to the CM. It is my job and I have to do it irrespective of the situation,” said Kumar, who commutes from Rohini to the secretariat daily.

Sources said that sometimes Kejriwal tells him not to stop people from coming near him.

It was Kumar who took Kejriwal to safety when there was a stampede-like situation last week outside the secretariat during the janata darbar. “Everyone wanted to meet the CM but I whisked him away in time,” he said. He has to be on his toes all the time as unlike other VIPs, Kejriwal is not predictable and doesn’t inform anybody about his movements.

“I have to keep a track of his movement through the security staff at the secretariat. I have to reach secretariat before he arrives and be there till he is in office,” he said. Sometimes, Kumar does not even get time to have lunch. This is when yoga comes handy, he said.

Even though Kejriwal has attacked the Delhi Police in his speeches, Kumar remains focused on his job. “It is difficult to keep your mind off what Kejriwal had said about the police. But his (Kumar’s) job is not to listen what the CM is saying but to ensure that he is safe. They have been trained like this. Till the time they are posted in security, their job is to secure the CM, even if they have to fight against their own people,” said a security staff at secretariat, requesting anonymity.
