Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh on Sunday targeted BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi over his alleged links with Indian-American Sanjay Puri who has agreed to pay a fine of $3.3 million along with three others to settle an alleged medical overbilling fraud.

Puri, chairman of the US India Political Action Committee that has been lobbying for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has said he and his company committed no crime.

Tweeting a photo, purportedly of Sanjay Puri with Modi, Singh said: “Sanjay Puri, close confidant of Modi fined 3.3 Million $ for over billing by US Administration. Any comment from Modi? (sic)”

Earlier this week, the PTI quoted Suri as saying, “As part of the settlement, Engage (his firm) denied any liability to the government. Specifically, Engage Medical committed no fraud, admitted no fraud and fought the government for more than two years in an effort to get the truth out.”

He said the government’s original claim sought many millions of dollars in recovery and in order “to avoid an expensive and time-consuming defence, Engage determined to agree to a settlement that was only a small per centage of the original claim”.

“Now that the case has been settled, it is unfair and irresponsible for the government to make such non-factual, derogatory comments to the public when it, too, decided to settle out of court, when the cost of litigation is so high, and when there is no evidence of fraudulent intent,” Puri said.
