The parents of the 23-year-old woman, who was gang-raped and killed in Delhi on December 16, 2012, have strongly criticised Samajwadi Party leader and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav for his statement that rapists should not be hanged but treated more leniently by the courts.
Mulayam Singh Yadav had said on Thursday it was unfair to award death penalty to rapists for their "mistakes" during a rally in Uttar Pradesh's Moradabad.
An ANI tweet quoted Mulayam as saying, "Rape ke liye phaansi dena ghalat hai, ladkon se ghalti ho jaati hai, hum satta mein aaye to kanoon mein badlav karenge (Handing death sentence for rape is not fair... boys make mistakes... there will be changes in the law if we come to power)."

"We do not agree with what Mulayam Singh has said. Such things cannot be accepted when they happen every day. When such people who are in positions of power make such comments, it is totally wrong, I would appeal to the people and to the women at large that they should not elect such leaders who make such comments. With such comments, he is only inviting criminals to repeat such acts," the girl's mother said.

The SP chief also said that there would be changes in the tough anti-rape law if his party came to power after the 2014 general elections.
"If such a big leader like Mulayam Singh makes such comments, then how can one imagine that this country will remain safe. Today, whatever atrocities are being done against women, nobody is talking about their safety. Instead, there is a design to keep women trampled forever. My request to the citizens of this country is that they should not elect such leaders who make such irresponsible comments," her father said.
