A court in Coimbatore has convicted an autorickshaw driver for raping his daughter in a state of drunkenness and abusing her for over three years.
The extent of the punishment will be known on Monday.

After three years’ suffering, including an abortion, she complained to the police in June 2009. After her mother, younger brother and other relatives and witnesses turned hostile during trial, the judge relied on medical reports and previous statements of the autorickshaw driver, M Palaniswamy, 49.

Acting on her complaint, the police booked the father.

Girl commits suicide
A first-year computer science student of a private college in Coimbatore committed suicide on Thursday after being teased by co-students. Her parents told press persons a day before taking her life, the girl had complained that some students had behaved ‘indecently’ with her. She locked herself in a room and hung herself from a ceiling fan, using her dupatta.

“After returning home on Wednesday evening, she said she would not go to college again, but did not say what the matter was,” said her father, J Jayaraj, a mill worker.
