ED searches 40 places across India, retrieves 10 lakh in new notes from Kolkata

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday searched 40 locations across the country to check illegal exchange of old currency and stashing of new notes.

Multiple teams conducted searches in various cities, in which, about 100 sleuths and police personnel were involved.

In the eastern region, the agency is searching at least 16 locations including six in Kolkata, two each in Bhubaneswar and Paradip (both in Odisha), Guwahati among others.

Detectives recovered Rs 10 lakh cash in new currency from premises of a doctor in Kolkata and an assortment of foreign currency worth Rs 4 lakh from the same area.

The ED enforces two laws - the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
