A militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in Handwara on Monday evening, police said.

Speaking to HT, an officer at the police control room in Handwara said a gunfight broke out between the militant and forces at Wadarballa in Handwara in the evening.

He added the militant has yet not been identified and search operations were continuing in the area.

According to PTI, an army jawan was also injured in the encounter.

Security observers have raised concerns about the present situation in the Valley and this encounter is yet another in the series of consecutive gun battles that the Valley has seen in last few weeks.

Last month, there were at least 11 encounters between forces and militants, many of them along the Line of Control (LoC), besides the attack on a CRPF convoy in Pampore, another attack on a BSF convoy, the gunning down of two policemen in Anantnag and a lone militant on a bus attacking security personnel in Udhampur district.

Three CRPF personnel were injured when militants attacked their camp in Pulwama in south Kashmir on Friday, even as home minister Rajnath SIngh visited Kashmir and reviewed the security situation.
