An engineering student fell to death after slipping from the third floor of The Great India Place mall on Monday night. The victim was identified as Shashank Shekhar (22), a final year BTech student of Galgotia College in Greater Noida.

According to the police, he had gone to the mall with five friends around 5pm for a party. Shekhar's friends claimed he slipped and fell from the third floor of the mall.

The victim was immediately rushed to Kailash hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The police are questioning Shekhar's friends and the security guard of the mall to ascertain the exact sequence of events. The CCTV camera footage of the mall is also being screened.

Shekhar hailed from Bihar and was presently residing in ATS Paradise in Greater Noida. He had just landed a job as an assistant engineer in a company in Noida Sector 63 through campus placement and was supposed to join there soon.

He was also to visit his hometown Patna on January 9 and had booked a ticket for the journey. The police are now waiting for his parents to arrive from the city to claim his body.

Increasing cases of people falling to death from Noida malls is becoming a cause for worry. On October 11 last year,  a retired army officer had jumped to his death from the fourth floor of Centre Stage Mall in Sector 18, Noida. According to the police, lieutenant colonel (retd) ML Mahajan, a resident of Sector 29, was under depression.

In January 2011, a BBA student had died after falling from the fourth floor of the Centre Stage Mall. Though the police said it was a case of suicide, his family had alleged murder.
