Six persons were wounded in a low-intensity blast that occurred in the parking lot of the Faraskhana police station in central Pune’s Budhwarpeth area, Thursday afternoon.

The Improvised Explosive Device (IED) used in the blast was planted on a stolen motorcycle parked by unidentified persons at the entrance of the police station, which is adjacent to the famous Dagadusheth Ganapati temple.

According to anti-terrorism squad (ATS) sources, the blast took place at around 2:05 pm and a police constable and five others sustained minor injuries due to splinters and ball bearings used in the blast. Police let off the injured after preliminary medical treatment and inquiry.

“Our investigation so far suggests that an IED was used in the blast,” Pune police commissioner Satish Mathur told HT.

“While we can not say if it was a terror attack, we are not ruling out any possibility,” he added.

Union home minister Rajnath Singh said, “I have sought report from the Maharashtra Police. It is a low intensity blast and the home secretary spoke to the state DGP.  We can’t rule out anything yet.”

The IED, according to Mathur, was placed in the stolen motorcycle with registration number MH-11 AQ 7174. Police constable DB Rajage from Mann taluk of Satara district had complained about his stolen bike a fortnight ago.

Immediately after the blast, senior officials and ATS teams collected CCTV footages. The commissioner added that it was too early to comment whether CCTV footages captured images of the person who planted the bomb.
