The incident took place when officials of the Town Planning department of the Haryana government accompanied by a huge contingent of police force started removing encroachments in the Durga Builders area on Sunday.

According to officials, after the demolition work got over in Phase 1 area, an irate mob stopped the officials from removing encroachments in Phase 2 and started hurling stones at vehicles. A few police vehicles and cranes were damaged in the stone-pelting. The mob also set on fire some police vehicles.

Apprehending further trouble, the officials decided to stop the demolition drive at 3.30 pm. The demolition drive had begun at about 8.30 am.

To stop the irate mob, the police resorted to lathi-charge, teargas and firing in the air. Apart from police vehicles that were torched, some ambulances were also damaged in the stone pelting.

“There are clear-cut Supreme Court directions on removing encroachments in both Phase 1 and Phase 2 areas to pave the way for genuine plot holders,” said Renuka Singh, District Town Planning Officer, Faridabad. “The demolition drive had to be stopped after the mob resorted to violence,” she added.

“The demolition drive will resume once the situation returns to normal,” she said. She confirmed that around 20 to 25 cops had been injured.

“Official vehicles were damaged when an irate mob resorted to violence during a demolition drive,” SHO Sarai Kwaja Kailash said.
