Female doctor tests positive for swine flu in Gujarat

A doctor who was on airport screening duty of passengers was tested positive for the H1N1 virus, taking the total number of swine flu cases reported in Gujarat to eight, Health Department officials said in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old female doctor from the Sola Civil Hospital was one of the doctors on duty at Sardar Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad for screening passengers for swine flu and was reported with symptoms similar to that of swine flu on July 30, they said.

According to Health Department officials, she was immediately shifted to the isolation ward at the Civil hospital in Ahmedabad and her blood sample was sent to the National Institute of Communicable Disease (NICD) now renamed as National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The report from NCDC said that the female doctor was positive for H1N1 virus, following which she was qurantined at the civil hosptial in Ahmedabad, health officials said.

Earlier, five members including one caretaker of group who had returned from the US last month after a year long foreign exchange programme had tested positive of swine flu.

One another girl who had come in contact with this infected group was also infected with the H1N1 virus.

The first positive swine flu case reported from Gujarat was that of a Thai national who had come to Kandla port in Kutch district.
