A rare sawfish approximately weighing 700 kgs landed in the fishing net of a local fisherman near Vijaydurg in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district of Konkan region on Monday.
The news was confirmed by Sindhudurg district collector Uday Chowdhary.
Fisherman Muneer Mujawar found the fish in his net.
“The fish is around 20-feet long and weighs around 700 kg. It is known as sawfish, because of its nose extension lined with sharp transverse teeth,” Mujawar said.
He said that it was rare to find such a fish in the net. “When I found the sawfish, it was already injured. It must have tried to escape from the net,” he said.
Mujawar, however, said that in the past similar incidents have occurred in Sindhudurg, wherein some rare fishes have landed in the fishing net.
Sindhudurg is the southernmost coastal district of the state. Vijaydurg is famous for dolphin sightings.
