For days, people at Indore’s Rajiv Awas Vihar colony heard the six-year-old cry, plead for mercy. No one ever intervened. But when she died on Friday, a mob gathered, ready to ransack the house of her foster parents, Rajesh Singh Sengar and his wife Baby.

The child had died of merciless beating. And postmortem revealed another fact: she was being sexually abused, allegedly by her foster father.

Neighbours said they were aware that Rajesh used to beat the girl, but they had no idea about the sexual exploitation.

On Friday morning, the girl’s father, Prem Singh Sengar, came from his village in Uttar Pradesh. A farmer with five children, he had 'given' the daughter to his cousin three months ago, hoping she would have a better future. He had no idea that Rajesh was such a monster, said Singh.

Rajesh and his wife have been arrested. A police officer said he has admitted to sexually exploiting the child.

The neighbours who failed the girl in life, refuse to fail her now. The house has been vandalised and a roadblock held. They want the culprits hanged.
