A toll plaza employee was injured at Khed-Shivapur on Mumbai-Bangalore national highway near Pune after a group of four unidentified men opened fire at the employees late on Tuesday night.

The police said there was a heated argument between the men in a Maruti Swift car and employees over the payment of toll. While employees allowed the car to pass the toll plaza, a man alighted from the car and fired at the staff members. Other employees rushed to the spot as the man fired again. The bullet hit one of the employees, 25-year-old Suresh Balu Khomane, in the chest.

Despite his injury, Khomane -- along with another colleague -- chased the car on a motorbike. When Khomane’s colleague realised that the former has been injured, he rushed him to a private hospital. Khomane’s condition is said to be stable.

The police have managed to track the registration number of the car from the CCTV footage. They have identified the owner of the car and are trying to locate him. The Pune rural police said the group of men were on their way to Sitara from Pune and fled back to Pune after the incident.
