A Sonepat court awarded life imprisonment to a family of four on Saturday, after finding them guilty of dowry death of a 25-year-old woman.

The convicts have been identified as Naveen Kumar, his father Mahavir, mother Santosh and brother Mohit, all residents of Moi Hooda village of Sonepat district.

As per details, Jagat Singh, father of Mukesh Devi, alleged that his daughter, who was married to Naveen, was beaten to death by her in-laws on October 19, 2011.

He said that he was informed on that day that his daughter was admitted to the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Rohtak, in critical condition. But when he reached there, he found her dead, he had said.

On his complaint, the Sonepat police had registered a case of murder against nine persons, including five cousins of Naveen. However, five others were let off by the court of additional district and sessions judge, Manisha Batra, for lack of evidence.

According to the complaint, the victim was married to Naveen in 2007 and also gave birth to a son and a daughter. But, her in-laws used to allegedly lay undue pressure on her for bringing more dowry. Her father had told the police that his daughter's in-laws had tortured her for not fulfilling their demands of dowry, which resulted in her death. Sources said that the case become an enigma for police as there was no evidence, but the accused could be nailed on the basis of the victim's post-mortem report. The entire act of the post-mortem was videographed by the police.
