A local court reissued summons to American chemical giant M/s Dow Chemicals in connection with Bhopal gas disaster criminal case. The company has been asked to appear before the court on November 12.

In response to an application by prominent NGOs working for the cause of gas victims, the court of chief judicial magistrate (CJM), Bhopal, had issued summons to Dow Chemicals in April too but the company refused to accept the summons sent by the Indian embassy through mail.

The company contended that the summons should be served through US state and justice department and Indian embassy had violated the protocol in sending summons to it directly.

The court has now asked the ministry of home affairs to route the summons through state and justice department of the US.

In their application, the NGOs had prayed to the court to make Dow Chemicals, which took over the Union Carbide in the year 2000, a party in the criminal proceedings against Union Carbide and its officials for the 1984 gas tragedy that killed more than 15,000 people and maimed thousands more.

The NGOs include Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangthan, Bhopal Group for Information and Action and Bhopal Gas Peedit Sangharsh Sahyog Samiti.
