Swami Prasad Maurya, 54, senior UP minister and state BSP chief is confident of his re-election from Padrauna assembly seat, from where he won the 2009 by-polls by a record margin. He would hit the campaign trail with the slogan - 57 years vs 2 years - making an obvious comparison of the development work initiated by him since 2009 with the work undertaken by other political parties in the previous 57 years.

“Whatever development work I have initiated in the constituency with the blessings of behenji (UP chief minister Mayawati) is a trailor. After a full term, I would initiate development work on a scale never seen before,” he tells Hindustan Times.

Maurya first arrived here during the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, bringing with him a R350 crore package for initiating road relaying and repair work. “All roads, not just in Padrauna but of the entire Kushinagar district are being repaired,” he says. Though he conceded defeat to RPN Singh of the Congress in the Lok Sabha elections, he settled the scores in the assembly by-polls of 2009, defeating RPN's mother by a whopping margin.

“The chief minister sent me here as the entire Kushinagar district was vastly neglected by almost all political parties. I rolled out development schemes on a massive scale and for the first time a Rs. 700 crore package was announced for the integrated development of the entire district, of which Padrauna is a part,” he says.

Attacking RPN Singh, he says: “I plan to free the area from the trio of raja, raj darbaar aur tikdam (king, king's court and politics of convenience).
