Two days after a Ghaziabad woman alleged that she was brutally gang raped and dumped near Fortis hospital in Noida, the police have indicated that the claim could be false. But, the victim has alleged that the police are shielding the accused.

Terming the case ‘seemingly false’, a senior Delhi Police officer confirmed to HT that the accused was, in fact, at east Delhi’s Kalyanpuri police station at the time of the incident.

Delhi Police sources also told HT that the complainant and her ‘male friends’ seemed to be operating a ‘pan-NCR extortion ring’ that specialized in framing men in false rape cases.

A highly placed source in Ghaziabad said that certain cops could be a part of the racket and a vigilance enquiry will soon be set up to unearth the truth.

“We assisted our counterparts in the investigation,” said a Delhi Police officer. “The woman’s medical report lays bare the fact that she was not brutalised as she claims. In fact, the man who wrote her complaint had been framed in a gang-rape case by her in January this year,” the officer added.

The police recorded the victim’s statement at the Ghaziabad district court on Thursday. “The victim was approached twice on Wednesday but she didn’t turn up to record the statement,” said Dharmendra Singh SSP, Ghaziabad. The police also visited the spot where a passerby, Satish Bhati, had found the victim. The police have spoken to Bhati on the phone but have not recorded his statement.

“I wonder why police have not taken my statement. I was an eyewitness,” said Bhati who lives in Khoda area. The victim claims that the Delhi police is shielding the accused and are trying to build pressure against her. “First they threatened me to withdraw the case. Now when they know that I will pursue the case, they are targeting my land lord. Five men from Delhi police have told him that I am running a sex racket. They have asked him to throw me out of the house,” said the victim.

“I am also disturbed that cops did not approach me till Thursday and on the basis of my past they are drawing a conclusion. Yes I registered a fake case (earlier) and I also gave a wrong statement at the court but I was under pressure. But that does not mean that I am again registering a fake case. The accused had made my obscene MMS and he was threatening me. The accused is taking revenge as I went against his will,” said the victim.
