Union home ministry cancelled foreign funding license of former additional solicitor general (ASG) Indira Jaising’s NGO Lawyers Collective (LC), a step the organisation termed as a continuation of its harassment and persecution.
Jaising and her husband and senior advocate Anand Grover are trustees of the NGO.
“LC perceives this to be a clear attack on the right to legal representation of persons who need legal services the most and a gross abuse of powers by the government of the day. It is also a clear attack on the right to free speech and association guaranteed by the Constitution of India,” said the NGO in a statement.
Reacting to the government’s order, the NGO also claimed that the cancellation order was issued on Sunday when all government offices are closed.
The government had cancelled the license of the NGO for six months in June alleging misuse of foreign funding.
Jaising was the Additional Solicitor General of India under the previous UPA government.
