'Green Siachen' photo gets national award

A picture on tree plantation of the world's highest and coldest battlefield Siachen Glacier, from Indian Army's 'Green Siachen' campaign has been selected for the National Photo Award.


A picture from 'Green India: Environment stories', an album shot under Indian Army's 'Green Siachen' campaign in Ladakh sector of Jammu and Kashmir by public relation officer (PRO), defence, SN Acharya, was selected in professional category by the ministry of information and broadcasting, director, photo division, Debatosh Sengupta said.

"The pictures shot on glacier sector is based on the green campaign of Indian Army to plant trees on Siachen to maintain ecological balance and save the glaciers," SN Acharya said.

The vision of a 'Clean Siachen-Green Siachen' is indeed on the verge of being accomplished, as is evident from the results of the plantation drive by Siachen Brigade, he said.

Acharya has vast experience of covering the northern sector of Indian Army from Kashmir to Ladakh and Doda-Poonch sectors. He was also awarded with vice-chief of army staff's instant commendation certificate.

The soldiers have already planted a total of 1,17,538 saplings in Siachen sector.

The award is likely to be given at a function in New Delhi in March this year.
