A 33-year-old doctor employed with a top private hospital in Gurgaon was arrested Saturday after his 27-year-old sister lodged a police complaint accusing him of raping her for nine years. HT is withholding the name of the doctor in order to protect the victim’s identity.

In her FIR with the Manesar police station, the woman — a resident of Nainwal village there but currently working and living in New Delhi — alleged that her brother had been raping her since 2005, when she was a Class 12 student. She said the abuse continued even after his marriage and despite the knowledge of her mother.

“We arrested the accused doctor within hours of registering the case. From the claims of the victim, a senior central government official, this is a serious case of incestuous abuse. She also says she was threatened,” said joint commissioner of police (crime) Vivek Sharma. He added that the woman had refused to undergo a medical examination.

She told the police she had endured the ordeal all these years as the family doted on her brother, the only son among five sisters, and also because she feared the stigma it would attract. Furthermore, she said, her mother had dissuaded her from reporting the matter. To avoid the abuse, she had moved out and gone to live with her elder sister in 2005, she added.

But the doctor continued to rape her on her occasional visits home, she said, adding that after nine years, she had finally had enough and gone to the police.
