Sharma is close to HP Congress chief Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and had worked as his political adviser when Sukhu was the HP youth Congress chief.

Braving heavy rain, the party workers danced in joy and distributed sweets in Hamirpur and other parts of the district.

Sharma had earlier worked as the district youth Congress chief also before becoming the DCC chief of Hamirpur.

Sources said Sukhu would give him some important responsibility so that Sharma helps him in organisational work.

Meanwhile, Naresh Thakur, who was named as the working president of the district unit of the party, will be made president of the party, following elevation of Sunil Sharma as the state general secretary.

Sources in the Congress on Friday said Thakur had been asked by the state party chief to start working as the district president till a formal notification was issued in his favour. After a long time, a Rajput has been named as the district president of the party in the district.

Sukhu infused young blood into the party at the state level to compete with other opposition parties particularly the BJP in wake of the next general elections to the Lok Sabha.

Meanwhile, Sukhu has told the party leaders of Hamirpur, who met him in New Delhi on Thursday, to fan out in villages and make a contact with the masses as the Lok Sabha elections can be advanced to this year.
