The director general of police, Srinivas Vashisht, on Thursday directed all district police chiefs to create help desks, exclusively for children and women, in all police stations. It is for the first time that any state in the north India will have such a facility to curb rising incidents of crime against women.

"In about a week's time, all complaints by women or children will be directed to the help desks," K Selvaraj told Hindustan Times on Friday. He was here to convene a meeting with district police officials on combating crime against women.

In recent months, there were many cases of sexual assault on women and children, including the Rohtak's Apna Ghar case, from all over Haryana. Majority of victims were from socially weaker section of society. The situation was so alarming that a parliamentary standing committee on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes visited victims and their families in October.

It is often alleged that the police work in a biased manner and try to hush the cases by terming them as "petty issues". Stung by criticism, the state took several measures.

"The help desks will be headed by a woman official who will be in constant touch with victims to ensure their safety," Selvaraj said, adding that desk would be functional during day but victims could make calls on the dedicated helpline numbers anytime.
