Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said the balloon of “India Shining” burst in 2004 and 2009 and the BJP will face rejection again this time as people don’t need empty promises as only the Congress can bring development.

He was addressing a rally at Dussehra Ground here to seek votes for the Congress candidate from Sirsa constituency Ashok Tanwar. Rahul Gandhi attacked the BJP and said its prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi is publicising the Gujarat model but Haryana does not need any other model. “Haryana has its own model, which is sufficient for development. The Congress government in the state led by chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has done what nobody could have even thought for Sirsa,” he said.

Targeting the BJP, Rahul said the party is raising the issue of corruption but in Karnataka, Modi is shaking hands and giving hugs to BS Yeddyurappa publicly on a stage and seeking votes for him, even as the latter had faced the corruption charges. “In Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh also, Modi is doing the same with mining mafia and corrupt leaders.”

He noted while the first phase of polling was about to start the BJP has not announced its manifesto. “I reached out to people, farmers and villagers and asked about their needs and demands before preparing the manifesto and announcing it on time.”

He said the Congress is doing the politics of development not on the basis of religion, language, place of birth or caste. “We will fight for a country, which is secular and where it is important that we all are one,” he added.

Appealing to people to vote for Tanwar, he said, “Tanwar is my good friend. He is a leader dedicated to people. He always stood by you every moment and in the coming time he will bring more development to Sirsa constituency.”
