Over 70.6% voters exercised their right to vote for the Ambala (reserve) parliamentary seat, elections for which concluded peacefully here on Thursday evening.

There are as many as 16.85 lakh eligible voters in the constituency spread in nine assembly segments in the districts of Ambala, Panchkula and Yamuna Nagar.

Returning officer (RO)-cum-deputy commissioner (DC) Saket Kumar said the voting might cross 71% as the calculations were still on at the time of filing of this report.

He said there were no reports of any untoward incident. The electronic voting machine (EVM) in Booth number 73 at Subhash Nagar developed a snag in the morning, following which voting was disrupted for some time, but the fault was soon rectified, he added.

Web cameras were installed in 100 polling booths across three districts for the first time. Kumar said such cameras which recorded the entire polling activities had been installed in all Lok Sabha constituencies of the state.

Fourteen candidates, including Rattan Lal Kataria from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Raj Kumar Balmiki from Congress, Kapoor Singh from Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Kusum Sherwal form Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), and  Surinder Pal Singh from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are in the fray for the seat, the counting for which will he held on May 16.

The commissioner police (CP) claimed that the polling was peaceful and the EVMs had been shifted at the counting centres at district head quarters. Three-tier security has been provided, he added.
