Vidhan Sabha speaker Kuldeep Sharma has favoured opening of a civil aviation university in Karnal to keep the proposal of a domestic airport floating here.

Sharma said following the initiative of the state government, the Centre had, in principle, agreed to upgrade an airstrip at Kulveri village near here to an airport.

"Though an airport is planned in Karnal, it will have limited users in the region. If a national university on aviation is planned then it will ensure long life of the project. Besides offering air link with other parts of the country, the university will open new job avenues for youth," said Sharma.

As of now, the Haryana Institute of Civil Aviation at Kulveri is offering courses to commercial pilots.

A Congress legislator from Gannaur in Sonepat, Sharma on Saturday had expressed his ambition to contest from Karnal parliamentary constituency.

Karnal is represented by two-time Congress MP Arvind Sharma and the speaker's demand is also being seen as his (Kuldeep Sharma's) political ambition beyond his own constituency.

In September, a bill to set up the first-ever national aviation university at Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh to be named after Rajiv Gandhi to train pilots, cabin crew and aircraft engineers was passed in Lok Sabha.

Without referring to the UP project, Sharma said the aviation sector had a wide scope of jobs in various fields.

"Palam airport in Delhi alone has around 18,000 professionals associated directly or indirectly with the facility. Karnal should have a centre that trains pilots, airhostesses and other technical professionals for the aviation sector. A dedicated centre may also be helpful in researches in various aspects of civil aviation," said Sharma.
