The Punjab and Haryana high court on Monday summoned the deputy commissioners of Karnal, Kaithal and Gurgaon for explanation as to why the respective district administrations had failed to protect the encroachments upon historical sites.

The directions came from the court headed by justice Mahesh Grover in an ongoing contempt of court case against the Haryana government authorities for failing to check illegal encroachments upon historical sites even after giving undertaking before the court.

Appearing for the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), senior counsel (special engagement) Sukhdeep Singh Sandhu informed the court that while carrying out excavation at historical site

'Theh Polar' in Karnal, ASI had dug at three places and found a number of 2,000 year old antiquities. However, earlier the state government had refused that there was nothing of historical importance at the site.

The counsel also informed the court that the local administration in Karnal, Kaithal and Gurgaon was doing nothing to preserve the ancient monuments and to free them from illegal encroachments.

The case will now come up for hearing on October 1.
