HP Cong infighting: CM Virbhadra says will contest polls ‘only if party wants’

The CM was talking to the media on the sidelines of a function to inaugurate a war museum in Dharamshala. “If the party wants, I will contest. And, if it does not want, I will prefer sitting at home,” said Virbhadra, when asked about it.

As his detractors within the Congress have upped the ante, Himachal Pradesh chief minister Virbhadra Singh on Wednesday said he will contest the assembly elections, due later this year, “only if the party wants”.

Virbhadra, the oldest serving CM of any state in India at 83, was talking to the media on the sidelines of a function to inaugurate a war museum in Dharamshala. “If the party wants, I will contest. And, if it does not want, I will prefer sitting at home,” said Virbhadra, when asked about it.

The comment comes close to the heels of Congress national general secretary Sushilkumar Shinde, in-charge of Himachal affairs, visited Shimla, renewing efforts to forge unity between warring factions owing allegiance to Virbhadra and state unit chief Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.

Virbhadra is currently on a three-day tour to Kangra. Shinde is expected to arrive in Dharamshala on August 16 to review the party’s position in the state’s biggest district, Kangra, known for tilting the political scales.
