The councillors of the town have resented the decision of the state government to hand over the control of the rest house located in the heart of the town back to the public works department.

The previous BJP government had transferred the rest house to the local civic body in order to construct a multi-storied building, including parking, through BOT system.

Dharmendra Sharma, vice-president of the local civic body, said on Thursday that the decision of the state government was anti-people and it was taken just to put on hold all such decisions that were taken by the previous BJP government for the welfare of the people of the state in general and Hamirpur in particular.

Sharma said the party would mobilise the public opinion to compel the state government to rescind its decision and allow the local civic body to construct new buildings in place of the old building of the rest house.

However, the Congress leaders have supported the decision of the state government saying that it was taken to restore the pride of the old heritage building of the town.

Kuldip Singh Pathania, former Congress MLA, said the decision of the previous BJP government was wrong and it was taken to help a few locals having allegiance to the BJP.

Pathania said the Congress would request the state government to reconstruct the rest house as it was well suited for the people visiting the town from other parts of the state and abroad. The rest house building is old and testimony to various events since Hamirpur became tehsil and thereafter a full-fledged district.

Many old dignitaries had stayed in this building during old days when it was the only available place for the night halt of VVIPs and other senior officers. It had remained the residence of the district police chief for one year when the new district of Hamirpur was created on September 1, 1972.
