With the start of reservoir impounding on Thursday, Kol dam, the flagship hydro-power project of the NTPC shall be ready to generate power by 2014-15.

The Kol dam project with an installed capacity of 800 MW will provide the much needed peaking capacity to the northern grid.

The NTPC took up implementation of its first hydro venture, Kol dam Hydro Power Project, on the Satluj river in Bilaspur, after the techno economic clearance.

Addressing the employees after inaugurating the filling up of the reservoir, Arup Roy Choudhury, CMD, NTPC, appreciated their efforts. NN Misra, director (operations), AK Jha, director (tech), were also present on the occasion.

The Kol dam project is located 6 km upstream of the Dehar power house of the Beas-Satluj link project.
The project has several unique features like diversion structure, 163 metre high rock fill dam, spillway and decanting.

The associated transmission system for Kol dam is presently being developed by Power Grid Corporation of India. Considering the high silt content of the Satluj, the life of the reservoir is expected to be 30 years.
