In the wake of increasing number of road mishaps in the state, the Himachal Pradesh government will run a special drive on road safety and campaigns to make tourists aware.

Such campaigns would also be made integral part of the fresh transport policy coming shortly.

Transport minister GS Bali informed this while addressing a press conference here on Wednesday.

“Keeping in view the increasing number of road tragedies in the state, the transport department will run a statewide drive for road safety,” said Bali.

Hoardings with advisories for those coming to visit the state would be displayed on all entry points of the state and strategic locations.

Bali added given the fateful tragedy of Mandi, in which 24 students of a Hyderabad-based engineering college were washed away in the Beas river.

“Special awareness campaigns will be held to aware tourists visiting the state about the dos and don'ts and the danger of going near the rivers of the state,” said Bali, adding that 95% tourists come to the state by road and hence such campaigns would be made essential.

The minister said the government made extraordinary changes in its relief manual and had sanctioned compensation to the kin of the students killed in Mandi.

He added the government was also making efforts to expedite the search operation and sophisticated equipments, including underwater cameras, would be used to find the trace of bodies.

He also slammed media for misrepresenting the statement of chief minister Virbhadra Singh after the tragedy.
