In a suspected case of honour killing, a 14-year-old girl was strangulated to death by her family members who later hanged her body to pass it off as a case of suicide in Mirzapur Jagir village here, the police said on Monday.

The victim, a Class 8 student was spotted with her male friend by her family members while she was going to market yesterday. They later strangled her and hanged her body from the ceiling to make it appear like a case of suicide, Digambar Kushwaha, circle officer of Nawabganj, said.

Informed by villagers, the police interevened even as the family was making preparations for cremating the body, claiming that she committed suicide after being scolded by her mother, Kushwaha added.

He said the post-mortem examination established the girl was strangled.

The police have lodged a case of murder and are looking for the male members of the family, who are on the run.
