The Huffington Post removed Sonia Gandhi's name from their list of world's richest leaders days after it placed the Congress president in the 12th spot saying they could not vouch for the data used to compile it.

In an editor's note, Huffington Post said: "Sonia Gandhi and the former emir of Qatar Hamid bin Khalifa al-Thani have been removed from this list. Gandhi was originally included based on a listing on a third party site which was subsequently called into question. Our editors have been unable to verify the amount, removed the link, and regret any confusion. Qatar’s emir was succeeded by his son Tamim in 2013."

It had said that they compiled the list "based on available data" and included kings, presidents, sultans and queens.

"For comparison, each country's GDP per capita is juxtaposed with a leader's personal net worth, just to show how different life is for the haves and have-nots."

The article created a buzz on social media sites, like Twitter, where some questioned the Congress leader and others the veracity of the data used by Huffington Post.

The Congress party denounced the report with Manish Tewari saying that it should stop publishing "ridiculous things".

"If Huffington Post would stick to huffing and puffing then I think they would do a much better job for themselves. Because if you do put out these absurd and ridiculous things out in print, then you only open yourself to be made a laughing stock. I would not even like to dignify with a response," Tewari said.

The report had pegged Sonia Gandhi's worth at $2 billion making her richer than the Queen of England and Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad.

President of Russia Vladimir Putin, Thai king Bhumibol Adulyadej, Prince of Monaco Albert II, Sultan of Oman Qaboos bin Said, Equatorial Guinea's president Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo and others were also named in the list.

According to the National Election Watch website, Gandhi's assets are worth Rs. 1.38 crore, she doesn't own a car or a house in India and has 2.5kg of gold and 88kg of silver.
