While there is little reaction from officials or the media in Pakistan over BJP leader K Laxman’s remarks on Sania Mirza, the local Hyderabadi community has taken offence to the remarks.

Most Hyderabadis in Pakistan live in Karachi and it was here that news of Sania Mirza’s marriage was most welcomed.

On Thursday, when contacted, Muhammad Ali Siddiqui, a senior journalist and member of the Bahadur Yar Jang academy in Karachi said that he took offence to “anyone who questioned the Hyderabadi origins of Sania Mirza.”

Citing the Hyderabadi community in Karachi as an example, Siddiqui said “Look at us. We have not been in Hyderabad Deccan for more than a generation but we take pride in our heritage and no one can tell us we are not from that place.”

Siddiqui and other members of the Bahadur Yar Jang Academy said that they would dedicate a monument or building to Sania Mirza when she visits them in Karachi next.
