More than 400 faculty members and some alumni of IIT Kharagpur went on a hunger strike on Wednesday  to protest against the delay in confirming Prof PP Chakrabarti as the next director.

"We have been wearing black badges since July 15 and today we observed a hunger strike. On July 27 we will be taking out a silent march before our convocation," Rajendra Singh, general secretary, IIT Teacher's Association, IIT Kharagpur said.

In July 2012, the HRD ministry had constituted a committee which had selected Chakrabarti as the next director. But his appointment has been pending a CVC clearance in a Coal India project case where Chakrabarti was named for alleged procedural irregularities.

Arjun Malhotra, a distinguished alumni and co-founder of HCL said the alumni had planned silent marches on July 20 in Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore.
