Watch out as you enter Thyagaraj Stadium this weekend: Iron Man might elbow you as he dashes off to buy one of those limited edition masks for himself, or that zombie with the cracked lip might have his eyes on you! So scuttle quickly into Comic Con, one of Delhi’s biggest pop culture events, without a backward glance and immerse yourself in this joyful three-day celebration of the comic book universe.

This weekend, this is where the city’s aficionados of the comic book form are headed to grab their favourite merchandise including posters of Captain America and issues of old favourites Suppandi, Batman and Chacha Chaudhary, among others.

The mega event is where you can gape at the inventiveness of the city’s cosplay stars — comic book enthusiasts dressed up as their favourite characters. This is also where international comic creators, popular brands and standalone artists will be showcasing their talents to interested readers. “The convention promises as much to old world fans as it does to the new and curious ones,” says Jatin Varma, the moving spirit behind Comic Con Delhi.

Apart from browsing at the numerous stalls with their quirky merchandise, fans can look forward to attending workshops conducted by some big names in comics, picking up rare titles or discussing Star Wars over superhero cupcakes.

The continuing success of the event is not surprising considering that, since the 1960s, India has had a robust comic book tradition in the form of Amar Chitra Katha comics that are rooted in the country’s rich myth and folklore.

Today, independent artists like Abhijeet Kini, Akshay Dhar and Sharad Sharma, who also double up as publishers, infuse their work with local flavour and endeavour, quite successfully sometimes, to go beyond superheroes and simplistic comics. So if you are a devoted fan of DC, Marvel, Mandrake or Manga, slip on your word bubble glasses and give yourself over to the fantastic spirit of the Comic Con.
