Five people including a 12-year-old girl were killed and 12 other passengers were injured in a road accident on Monday that happened near Choral village which is about 40km from Indore on the Indore-Icchapur state highway.
The incident occurred around 3.15pm under Simrol police station limit when a passenger bus heading towards Sanawad from Indore collided head on with a van that was coming from Omkreshwar.
The accident took place because the bus while overtaking another vehicle rammed into the van and then overturned.
Simrol police station in-charge Pradeep Bakshi said that out of the five victims, three were identified as Dhananjay Mishra (40) of Paliganj, Bihar, Narendra Pathak (55) of Alwar, Bihar, and Pooja (12), daughter of Ramesh from Vijay Nagar, Indore. The identity of two persons who died on the way to the hospital is yet to be ascertained.
According to the passengers and eye witnesses, the bus driver lost control over the vehicle after it dashed against the van coming from the opposite direction and then overturned and fell into a ditch, trapping the passengers inside.
As soon as the police and rescue team from Mhow and Barwah village got information about the incident, they rushed to the spot and took the injured to nearby hospitals at Barwah and Mhow.
The van too was damaged owing to the impact of the collision. Four of the passengers who were critically injured were rushed to Indore in 108 ambulance, but two of the injured died midway and one died during treatment.
Two other passengers who were critically injured with several fractures were referred to MY Hospital.
The passengers alleged that the bus driver was under the influence of liquor. The driver of the bus is absconding and police have seized the bus.
