Immediately after formally assuming charge on Thursday, Union home minister Rajnath Singh asked his officials to come up with innovative ideas to deal with internal security challenges and sought better coordination between the Centre and states.

After taking charge, Singh had a three-hour-long interaction with senior officials wherein he asked for an actionable blueprint that would include ideas to resolve border disputes with neighbouring countries without compromising national interests.

During the familiarisation exercise, Singh asked the officials dealing with different divisions to make individual presentations.

There was no mention of UPA government’s pet proposals to set up the controversial National Counter Terrorism Centre and passage of the Communal Violence Bill, which were opposed by the BJP, sources added.

The minister was briefed about the problems along the international border, like infiltration from Bangladesh and the dispute with Pakistan on Sir Creek, and how to resolve them.

Singh told officials to let him know what kind of intervention he could make to facilitate inter-ministerial coordination, sanction of funds and ensuring cooperation of Central and state governments.

Singh also told the officials to ensure security of people from Northeast, particularly those living in metros, adding that their harassment was intolerable. The ministry now plans to issue an advisory to all states in this regard.

He was briefed about the June 2 Andhra Pradesh bifurcation process.

Rajnath also met Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung and is understood to have discussed the capital’s political situation.
