BJP president Rajnath Singh said the Ishrat Jahan case was being hyped while seeking a debate on the Food Security Bill in the parliament.

“The country is full of encounter cases, and more than 3,000 such cases took place before 2002. But the Ishrat Jahan case is being blown out of proportions for political benefits,” Singh said in Guwahati on Thursday.

The UPA government, he added, should disclose the names of terror organisations that had links with Ishrat Jahan instead of pitting the CBI and the IB against each other for scoring political brownie points.

“This is yet another instance of the government misusing constitutional institutions and lowering their dignity. The least the government can do is give CBI functional autonomy,” the BJP president said.

Singh labelled the food security bill as a populist measure with the Lok Sabha elections in mind.
