Congress leadership is adopting the ‘wait and watch’ policy in declaring the names of the candidates for the four parliamentary constituencies of Marwar.
In the last general elections of 2009, Congress had won three out of four seats from Marwar and wants to repeat this performance. While aiming to regain the lost battle in the state assembly polls, the party might also unseat the sitting MPs. But the leadership will first wait for the BJP candidates list before it comes to any decision.
“We have already prepared a panel of probable candidates, but last minute changes can happen,” a senior Congress leader said here, adding the party leadership has decided to wait for the BJP list before deciding to make any change for the Jodhpur and Pali seats.
Union minister for culture Chandresh Kumari, member of Parliament from Jodhpur, is keen to contest the election from here. Party sources say the Congress will probably repeat her from Jodhpur, but it will depend very much upon who is contesting from BJP. If the BJP fields former external affairs minister Jaswant Singh from Jodhpur, Congress will probably like to field a big gun against him.
Reports suggest that Ashok Gehlot, former chief minister may be pitted against him, because other back ward class votes are a deciding factor in Jodhpur with approximate 4.62 lakh voters, including 1.60 lakh Mali voters.
If BJP fields a Mali or candidate other than Rajput, Congress could repeat Chandresh Kumari from Jodhpur.
And in Pali, if BJP fields a Jain candidate, certainly Congress will field an OBC candidate from Sirvi community and former minister Madho Singh Deewan, who is also a religious leader of community, is top of the list. And if BJP fields a Seervi, then Congress will think to repeat a Jat candidate.
From Barmer, Congress could repeat the sitting MP Harish Choudhary, but if BJP throws a new name from the Jat community, he could lose the chance.
In Jalore, Congress will try to take advantage of ‘anti Patel’ atmosphere and could field Vaibhav Gehlot, son of former CM Ashok Gehlot.
