Disabled people find it difficult to visit the Jawahar Kala Kendra as it does not have proper ramps.

Children from Disha, a resource centre for people with multiple disabilities run by a non-government organisation, visited JKK for a photo exhibition on Thursday. The exhibition was held by Save the Children, another NGO.

A child from Disha said, "I am 15 years old and believe in doing things myself. I did not like it when people lifted my wheelchair to help me move around at JKK. If there were ramps, I could have moved around on my own."

Kavita Apporva Verma, director Disha, said, "I am appalled at the fact that JKK, a place known for art and artists is apathetic towards disabled people. It hurts to learn that despite pushing ourselves hard to become independent in several ways, we still have to be at the mercy of some people to either carry us or lend a hand to walk ahead. It hurts our dignity."

When contacted, Bachchu Singh Meena, additional director general of Jawahar Kala Kendra, said, "We had asked Verma if she needed assistance but she declined. Besides, the building is constructed on Vastu principles and we cannot meddle with Charles Correa's architectural design." Meena said they provide temporary ramps when disabled people come to the venue.

Verma said, "They provided us iron gates and not ramps. Moving on those was worse than being carried by someone." She added, "I hope the authorities will show some sensitivity towards us and be careful in future so as not to hurt our dignity."

Jawahar Kala Kendra is a centre dedicated to arts and artists. It was designed by noted architect Charles Correa in 1986.
