Taking a leaf out of Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) attack on VIP culture, rural development minister Jairam Ramesh has slammed the prime minister and president’s convoy that hold up traffic for long.

While conceding that it is necessary to hold up traffic for the prime minister and president’s convoy for security reasons, he said, the hold up time could easily be reduced by cutting the number of vehicles. “There are too many vehicles in their convoy which can be easily reduced,” he said. PM’s convoy constitutes a minimum of 15 vehicles.

Jairam said except for the PM and president, traffic should not be held up for anyone. “It’s ridiculous to hold up traffic even for army/navy/air force chiefs,” he said.

Making it clear that the prevailing VIP culture should stop, he said, he will write to the defence minister AK Antony asking him to do something about it.

The minister’s attack seems to have stemmed from the AAP’s focus on austerity in public life. Lavishing praise on the new party he said AAP has caused a ‘political earthquake.’ “All the established parties have to change the way they operate. AAP’s simplicity has changed the rulebooks” he said.
