In a veiled warning, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said in Gwalior on Saturday that the Central Bureau of Investigation officers who were working “against” BJP leaders would have to be answerable to the law of land and the country sometime or the other.
Jaitley was speaking at the state BJP’s two-day palak-sanyojak meet in Gwalior at the Mela Ground on its concluding day.
“The UPA government’s attempts are to cover up its scams through the CBI. The latter was being used against the BJP leaders. First it was Gujarat BJP leaders, now BJP leaders of Rajasthan are being targeted,” he said.
“CBI is being completely misused. The officers who are doing all this would have to answer to the law and the country sometime or the other,” he added.
Slamming the Congress on the issue of naxalism and dynasty politics, Jaitley stressed on the need of initiating a debate in the country on dynastic leadership vs real leadership.
He said none of the leaders in the BJP - including national-level politicians like Atal Bihari Vajpayee - became leaders because of their family background.
“In Congress there is talk doing the rounds for the next leader. There should be a debate whether one should become a leader because of his family, or one should become a leader because of his competence and hard work,” the BJP leader said.
“There is weak leadership at the Centre. The model of the corporate world where a board of directors takes the decision and the CEO implements it can do well, but the world’s biggest democracy cannot be run on this model,” Jaitley added.
Referring to the decade low GDP growth of 5% which country has witnessed now Jaitley said during the then NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee the growth rate was 8%. But now on the international level a phrase ‘Policy paralysis’ was used for India. It was the first time when such a term was used for the country.
He said a low GDP growth rate not only meant a weak economy but also decrease in employment avenues, weakening infrastructure and low investment. Also, this would not only reduce the investment from the foreign countries but also the industrialists in the country would invest their money abroad to avoid any risk.
He said after the recent naxalites attack in Chhattisgarh the Congress blamed Raman Singh government for not taking on the naxalites. But the fact remained that if there was any government which took on the naxalites it was Raman Singh government.
Jaitley said when P Chidambaram became the home minister he repeatedly talked of taking a stern action against naxalites. Prime Minister himself described it as a serious problem. But after an article by Sonia Gandhi in the Congress’ magazine ‘Congress Sandesh’ the fight against naxalism weakened.
Mani Shankar Aiyar and Digvijay Singh started issuing statements (against stern action against naxalites).
He said the fact remained that Congress supported Moists in Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The history was witness to it.
Terming the UPA government as the most corrupt government in the world he said the Rs 64 crore Bofors scam shook the then Rajiv Gandhi government looked like a cottage industry now in comparison to the amount of scams during the UPA II government, which amounted Rs 1,76,000 crore and Rs 1,86,000 crore.
