A special squad of the Andhra Pradesh police took into custody Shoeb Jagirdar (39) in Jalna in connection with the May 18 Hyderabad blast. This is the first arrest in the case.

A three-member team, led by Inspector SI Rao, arrived in Jalna on Thursday and asked the Sadar Bazaar police for directions to Jagirdar's house. Sadar Bazaar police officials said, on condition of anonymity, that the team gave no details of why it was there and why it was taking Jagirdar to Hyderabad.

"Jagirdar has several cases of vehicle theft registered against him, but he was never known to be a member or sympathiser of the Students Islamic Movement of India (which is suspected to have had a hand in the blast)," Additional Superintendent of Police Rajendra Dahale told HT.

Jagirdar, a school dropout, hails from a Muslim family that once owned most of the land in Jalna, but has now fallen on bad times.

Jagirdar lived with his wife and two sons in Rehamani Colony in a house that was once part of a palatial mansion. His father, Barududdin, has been living with his younger brother in Aurangabad for the last four years. Jagirdar's mother died about three months ago and it was only with help from friends that he managed to clear her medical bills, police sources said.

Jalna, incidentally, was the only place which witnessed a violent reaction to Hyderabad's Mecca Masjid blast.
