Members of Pradesh Youth Congress (PYC) on Monday staged a protest in front of the deputy commissioner's office to press their demand for the implementation of 73rd amendment in the Panchayat Raj Act of the state.

Led by Chetan Pratap Singh Chouhan, secretary, Indian Youth Congress (IYC) and in-charge of J&K affairs, activists of PYC assembled at party headquarters at Saheedi Chowk and started a march towards the deputy commissioner's (DC's) office.

After reaching the DC office, activists locked the main gate from inside and sat on dharna in front of the office.

Chouhan said that strengthening of the panchayati raj system in the state at par in other parts of the country was their sole motto and PYC would not sit idle until the panchayats in the state were empowered on the pattern of 73rd amendment of the constitution and would become an effective institution of service to the grass root people in the state.

"Panchayats are the basic institutions of democracy and these institutions should be further strengthened by bringing amendments to state Panchayat Raj Act", he said.

He said that it was not understood why the state government led by chief minister Omar Abdullah was not in favour of strengthening panchayats in the state.

Vice-president Pranav Shagotra, PYC general secretary S Manjit Singh Jatt and secretary Rajbir Singh Manhas also led the procession.
