An army jawan posted at the Indian Military Academy committed suicide by shooting himself with his service weapon early on Monday morning while he was on duty at a cadets' hostel.
Sources alleged that the soldier may have committed suicide because of acute work pressure.
The soldier has been identified as Chandbir, a resident of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh. He was part of the Dogra regiment and was on duty at the Bhagat Battalion dormitory in the academy when he committed suicide.
He was rushed to the military hospital in Dehradun where he succumbed to his injuries.
While IMA officials said the matter was under investigation and they were not allowed to speak on the issue, the police said they are still awaiting details from the academy.
"We have received preliminary information about the incident but details are yet to come. Our investigation will begin only after that. At present it is difficult to say why the deceased killed himself," said Basant Vihar circle officer Harish Sati.
However, sources alleged that Chandbir was facing acute work pressure and was depressed because of that.
